What You Should Know About Hocket Tryouts

It is that time of the year again when young hockey players, parents and coaches are gearing up for tryouts. Having a successful tryout is important, and to achieve that you must start your preparations early. This is important for both players and parents alike. Not only must you be ready physically, but mentally as well.
While there are many kinds of tryouts, it is important to keep in mind that player evaluations are on basic skills of the game. These include skating, puck control skills, shooting, passing and a good understanding of the game.

Here are some useful tips to keep in mind:

Checklist
-Practice on the ice a few weeks before the tryouts. Even if you have been active during the summer, it is important that you try to hone your hockey skills
-Get yourself in good skating shape
-Have chat with the coach and try to understand what your competition is like.

Do
-Play your best during all activities
-Stay calm; listen closely to instructions given out
-Ensure equipment is in top form
-Be punctual; have fun

Do not
-Get nervous or anxious about the tryouts
-Walk in for the tryouts without being in good skating shape
-Hesitate to ask questions
-Forget to put your best effort
-Forget that it is only a game

Parents Checklist
-Ensure you stay up-to-date on policies and procedures before the tryouts
-Help your child have enough time on the ice to practice before the tryouts
-Meet the coach; try to gauge how the players would be evaluated
-Do not set unrealistic goals
-Keep in mind that it is important that your child enjoys himself and herself
-Tell your child that it is only a game; and not a matter of life or death
