Understanding Strengths and Weaknesses in Hockey

In hockey, it is important to not just understand strengths and weaknesses in the game, but also that they are constantly changing every time a player moves on the ice, changing the situation and the environment aroud him. A single move by a player can close or open an opportunity or present an extremely different shift of the game. Take a look at a stat sheet. Then you will understand the strengths and weaknesses of each team. This however is not sufficient to take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses.

You must be totally unbiased to take advantage. If biased towards one team, then it makes it harder to understand and spot the weaknesses in your team. Being biased can also lead to overestimating the other team, and even becoming absolutely pessimistic. The opposite of this can also hinder your team’s winning capabilities. Use a stat sheet to start off with. Watch the other team’s players closely during a game and figure out for yourself how they counter every move and shot.

Next, you must discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the other team with your players and make them see it. It is important that you also relay to them what they need to do to win and motivate them. This should be an ongoing discussion with your players. You must be able to maintain an open discussion on the strengths and weaknesses in their game, and show how they can play better every single time.
