Few noteworthy trophies from the NHL

The National Hockey League (NHL) rewards its players with few awards. Among those are Hart Memorial trophy for the NHL’s Most Valuable Player, James Norris Memorial Trophy for the NHL’s best defenseman, the Vezina Trophy for the NHL’s top goaltender, the Art Ross Trophy for the NHL’s points leader and the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for the NHL’s Top Goal Scorer that recognizes the best in the game.

The Hart Memorial Trophy originally known as the Hart Trophy is awarded to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team and the winner is selected at the end of the regular season by the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association. The trophy was donated to the NHL in 1923 by Dr. David A. Hart and starting in 1924 it has been awarded 88 times to date. Sidney Cosby of the Pittsburg Penguins is favored to win the trophy for 2013-14 regular season.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy awarded annually to the top defense player who demonstrate all-around ability in the position. Since 1954, this trophy has been awarded 59 times. Again, the members of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association vote at the end of the regular season to select the best defenseman.
