Training in the Off Season
Posted in Hockey Tips |Hockey is a strenuous sport and having an eight month long season does nothing to help that. In addition to the season-long training, most players hit the ice for almost six days a week during the long season. So when the off season comes around it is important to let the body rest.
Now this does not mean that players should lounge about at home and become couch potatoes. Rather, it means that the players should do the right type of training that allows them to recuperate and still stay in good shape. In other words, the focus of training during this period should be recovery and rebuilding.
Stretching is a must during this period. After a proper warm up session, perform active and static stretching. Weight training should be limited to lighter weights. Using a combination of light weights and higher reps will help to repair and strengthen tendons and ligaments. Aerobic training is another important factor during the off season. Low force training lasting about 40 minutes will serve to improve endurance. Engaging in other types of sports is also a good idea. This will help the body by using different sets of muscles, especially those that are used infrequently in the game of ice hockey.
As you can see, off season training is about staying in shape while not taxing the body too much. Going on a short vacation is also a good idea as it helps the mind relax and rest as well.
