How to Wrap a Hockey Blade

Posted in Hockey Tips |

Almost any hockey fan will tell you that the stick used in the game is the single most important tool that will determine success or failure in a game of hockey. Every second counts when it comes to passing, shooting and carrying the puck and for that every player must feel comfortable (to the point of superstition) with the hockey stick that he uses to play with.

Both cloth tape which improves the grip on the stick and friction (electrical) tape which improves puck handling and water damage are used to tape the stick before play.

So, here are some steps that will help you wrap your hockey blade the way the pros do it:

1. First, get electrical/ friction tape and a knife or a cutting blade.
2. Secondly, take the electrical tape and begin to wrap tightly around the blade of the stick starting at the base working your way outwards. Some players do the entire blade of the stick but it is not necessary to do so. The amount of tape you use will determine the power of your shots, passing and so on and so forth.
3. Once you do this, rub the blade taped with a puck, which will help the blade and the tape stick together better.
4. You can also apply wax from an old candle to the bottom of the blade, which will reduce friction between the taped blade and the ice.
5. Finally, check to see if the tape holds and whether you are having trouble with your shots. Also, check for wear and tear, and if this happens, one can continue to experiment with tape until you are satisfied.
