From Baseball Pants To Dress Pants: Sporty Is The New Trendy

With the 2012 London Olympics fast approaching, it’s no surprise that designers have been turning to sports and sportswear for inspiration. London Fashion Week is certainly proof of this phenomenon. From hooded sweatshirts to figure-baring swimwear, the world of sports has invaded the runway.

Although strictly speaking, there won’t be any models strutting the catwalk wearing actual basketball uniforms, the trend has been steadily moving towards sports-inspired ensembles. Designers for ladies wear and menswear have taken the clean lines and iconic styles of sportswear and have steadily been reinventing the same into more flattering designs.

A great example of an ensemble that has made the transition from strictly sportswear to fashionably sporty is the baseball uniform. If you walk down the street, you’ll see tons of people (especially men) clad in designer baseball jackets. The distinctive stripe of baseball pants can be seen in jeans, slacks, even dress pants! For women, the bodysuit is the prime example since it straddles the gap between swimwear and lingerie.

A reverse effect is also noticeable. Sportswear designers nowadays have also become more fashion conscious. More time and effort is put into making actual sporting clothes more attractive. Sports brands have been collaborating with high fashion designers in order to have an edge over their competitors. Take for example the successful partnership between Adidas and Stella McCartney.

Although not all sports attire will make it to the runway (football uniforms might prove a challenge), it’s reasonable to conclude that sports has been influencing fashion steadily over the years. The sporty look is no longer limited to your gym attire. With this trend, even your sweat pants can be high fashion!
